A successful to start to the New Year may be less about big, lofty goals, and more about small, everyday changes. These Ayurvedic remedies are simple, sustainable and guaranteed to set you up for a more balanced 2016:
- Eat a home-cooked, warm meal once a day.
- Get more sleep. Turn off electronics at a certain time each night and replace screen time with a sweet, pre-sleep destress ritual.
- Set your alarm clock for 15 minutes earlier than usual. Use that time to set your intentions for the day or read an uplifting passage to set the tone.
- Stick to the plan. Your body craves routine. If you exercise at the same time every day, eat at the same time and sleep at the same time, your body will respond with better digestion, better sleep and overall better immunity.
- Drink to your health. Sip on warm water or an herbal tea throughout the day to help detoxify the body and prevent dryness.
- Breathe. Take five minutes every day to do deep belly breaths.
- Check in more often. Take advantage of the longer evenings. Use the quieter nights to scan mind-body, journal, revisit goals and envision possibilities.
- Lastly, rather than doing more this year, try to make doing “nothing” a priority. The Italians have a phrase, “Il bel far niente,” which means “the beauty of doing nothing.” In America, we tend to fill up our calendars so much that we have no time for spontaneity. Try leaving a few days or a whole weekend completely free, and as best you can, enjoy “doing nothing.”
